How to increase your websites social shares

Getting your visitors to share your content is a great way to boost traffic to your site.  When a visitor shares your content it is an endorsement to their friends.  One social share has the potential to bring an avalanche of traffic to your site.

So how can you encourage your visitors to share your content?  Just adding social sharing buttons to your web pages is not enough.  Engaging content is not always enough.  So let us take a look at how we can boost our social shares.

Get More Social Shares

How To Get People To Share Your Content

People like to share content that is already shared.  Studies have found that people are more likely to share content that has a lot of shares already.  This means that if a piece of content has no shares people are reluctant to share it.

There are a few services available to help you exchange shares.  this allows you to get shares to your new content.  The best service I have found for this is Followlike.  This is a website that allows you to get social shares to your content.  You add the URL of your content, select the social network to share on and other users start sharing.  In return, you share other people’s content.  You can do this for Facebook, Twitter and Google+.  Followlike also allows bookmarking on Delicious, Diigo, Tumblr and Reddit.  It is free and you can sign up here.

Social Share Group

Adding social sharing icons to your website is easy and there are many ways to do this.  The only service I use for this is SumoMe.  SumoMe is free (they do have a paid premium option) for all the services I use.  I use SumoMe to add my social share icons as a floating sidebar.  The two other social sharing services I use from them are Image Sharer and Highlighter.

Image Sharer adds sharing icons to all the images on your site.  Visitors can then share individual images to their Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest accounts.  Try it on the image below.

Image Sharer

Highlighter allows visitors to share snippets of text by highlighting them on the page.  Try highlighting this next sentence.  Highlighter shares this text I have highlighted.

These three SumoMe applications have helped my sites grow and delivered a lot of traffic for free.  You can find SumoMe here.

Another way to increase your social shares is to offer a bribe for a share.  Locking content so it can only be accessed after sharing is one way.  I have tried this strategy, but I find it tends to drive visitors away from the site.

I hope you have found these tips useful.  if you have any suggestions or have other services you think are interesting get in touch below.
